When photography can’t express the things you need it to, I turn to music.

Kia ora curious internet traveller.

I have been a musician for as long as I have been interested in photography, and that started when I was around ten years old. My mother gave me a Kodak Retina camera (without any film) and my father gave my brother Paul and I guitars. I still have mine, though I regrettably left my brother's at a bus stop after school one day. Paul went on without his first guitar, to start iconic 1980s indie band Pop Mechanix and after I had a brief stint as a guitarist with Jordan Luck's soon to be Dance Exponents I left Aotearoa, followed my heart and travelled to the UK to study photography.

On the 1st of August 2025, I decided to see what would happen if I told stories with music. Not abstract soundscapes but actual songs. I drew on a career of observational and lived experience — photographs I've taken, stories I've been told, and things I remember or have experienced. A musical landscape emerged and after months of writing and recording, the songs began to appear. The process, I think — though I don't fully understand why — is very similar to working in the field as a photographer, circling around a subject, refining and adjusting your view until the story or song makes sense. The result is this: Air and Twigs - 8 songs drawn from life.
